[Grammar in Use Unit 6] Past Continuous: "At that time, I was in the middle of doing something"

Study Notes

Hello!

In our last session, we learned the 'Past Simple (Unit 5)', which is used to talk about things that are already finished. Today's topic, the 'Past Continuous', is the counterpart to the Past Simple and is a tense frequently used in TV shows and movies to set a vivid atmosphere.

The core definition provided in the textbook is: "An action that was in progress at a specific point in the past, rather than an action that was completed."

Now, I will begin summarizing my study notes for today.

1. Distinguishing Between Past Continuous and Past Simple

If the Past Simple (I did) is a 'photograph' capturing a single point in the past, the Past Continuous (I was doing) is a 'video (GIF)' that continuously displays a moment in the past.

  • Past Simple: "I watched a movie last night." (I watched a movie last night. - Watched the movie at some point last night.)
  • Past Continuous: "At 10 o'clock last night, I was watching a movie." (Around 10 o'clock last night, I was in the middle of watching a movie. - Emphasizes that the movie was playing at that moment.)
  • Basic Structure: was / were + verb + ing
    • I / He / She / It ➔ was studying
    • We / You / They ➔ were studying

2. Integration Rule: Background vs. Event

When we tell stories in English, the Past Continuous and Past Simple are usually used together as a set. It was easier to understand when I imagined a video playing in my head.

Past Continuous = 'Background Situation' Past Simple = 'Single Event'

  • “Matt phoned while we were having dinner.”
    • Background (Continuous): We were in the middle of having dinner (were having dinner).
    • Event (Simple): Matt called during that time (Matt phoned).
  • “I hurt my back while I was working in the garden.”
    • Background (Continuous): While I was working hard in the garden (was working).
    • Event (Simple): An accident occurred where I hurt my back (hurt my back).

3. Changes in Situation Based on Tense

This part was truly confusing. To be honest, even while summarizing it now, I don't feel I understand it 100% perfectly, so I think I will need to review this several times after finishing this post.

① When actions overlap (Background + Event)

  • "When Karen arrived, we were having dinner."
  • Meaning: When Karen arrived, we were (already from before that) in the middle of having dinner.
  • Situation: As Karen opened the door and walked in, we were already sitting at the table and eating dinner.

② When events happen sequentially (Past Simple + Past Simple)

  • "When Karen arrived, we had dinner."
  • Meaning: Karen arrived. (Then,) we started having dinner.
  • Situation: We waited without eating until Karen arrived, and only started the meal after she arrived.

Example mixing both of the above "I was walking along the road when I saw Dan. So I stopped, and we talked for a while." While I was walking along the road (Background: Continuous), I saw Dan (Event: Past), and then I stopped (following sequence) and we talked for a while (list of past actions).

Conclusion

After studying up to this point, I feel like I've finally gotten a general sense of how to answer questions like "What did you do yesterday?". I plan to review this repeatedly and practice it when I talk to coworkers or friends in the morning.

See you in the next Unit 7. Fighting!
